I remember watching and recording on a dubbed over VHS cassette (the kind you had to cover with scotch tape over the hole) Sinbad’s “Soul Music Festival” airing from Jamaica in 1996.  SinbadAmong the bands featured was a set by Con Funk Shun.  I had heard some of their songs before then but didn’t know the group very well.  I was blown away watching them perform ‘live’.

I had bought a ‘Best of’ cassette tape of theirs from Blockbuster Music and took it with me when I joined the Army.  Over seas, I had a lot of time to listen to it on my Walkman since we were in the middle of the desert during down time…and I played the Funk out of that tape for about three months.  During that time I got to know all the songs on that mix have been a fan ever since.  Simply put, when it comes to this groups music, it’s hard to find a bad song.

Con Funk Shun sits as one of the hardest hitting funk groups the scene has ever known.   With the help of music like their song “Got to be enough,” featured here today it should come as no surprise that this group has been instrumental in shaping not only music at the time, but still serve as a major influence.  On this song, the clav-guitars and that on-fire horn section make the song high energy and come to life.  As you can imagine, this was a big hit in the club scene back in the 80’s.   At their best I would personally rank them right up there with Earth, Wind, & Fire.  Musically, they are all talented musicians and vocals that are amazing.  Go anywhere on the internet to check this band out and you’ll see the same feedback over and over again, “They don’t make them like this anymore.”
